Previous college attendance must be disclosed even if you did not finish. CAO's Third Level Higher Education category includes attendance anywhere, for any period, whether you passed, failed or took no examinations. Omitting it can put the application at risk. CAO Handbook 2027, printed page 16.
What evidence goes with your history?

The college assesses the qualification. An earlier degree does not by itself guarantee admission, exemptions or advanced standing on a new course. Handbook, printed page 16.
CAO or a direct application?
The handbook generally directs applicants to the institution for entry beyond first year, postgraduate courses, follow-on courses and most part-time or evening courses. Some mature-entry applications also go directly to the college. Check the exact programme, not just the college name. Handbook, printed page 33.
For example, applying for a first-year place through CAO and asking to transfer into second year are different requests. Before applying, ask Admissions which route handles your intended entry year and whether it can assess previous learning.
Reapplying is not transferring
If you are seeking a new CAO place in 2027, you need a new application, the fee and the required documents. Your old CAO application cannot simply move into the next cycle. A deferred place has its own reapplication conditions. Handbook, printed pages 6, 32 and 99.
Include every relevant category, not just previous higher education. Earlier Leaving Certificate, QQI or other results may also be relevant. Handbook, printed page 6.
Ask these questions before choosing
- Which application system and deadline apply to this course and entry year?
- Which transcripts or attendance records are required?
- Can the institution assess Recognition of Prior Learning, and what evidence does it need?
- What fees and funding rules apply given my previous attendance?
