LEAVING CERT · 2027

What comes up in
Leaving Cert Agricultural Science?

Understand the science behind soil, crops and animals, then apply it to farming decisions.

THE SHORT ANSWER

See how the subject fits together

Scientific practices connect the soils, crops and animals strands. Your investigative study should connect a question to evidence, not just describe farm activities.

A revision map, not a prediction of which questions will appear. Official sources and scope

Check your examination cohort

This guide uses the syllabus for the 2027 examination. Curriculum Online also lists a replacement for a later cohort; do not switch to it simply because it appears first on the subject page.

MORE THAN A TOPIC LIST

How is Agricultural Science assessed?

  • Written examination and Individual Investigative Study.

This describes the syllabus assessment components. Use the SEC instructions for your year for timing, question choices, materials and submission arrangements. Read the official assessment section. (opens in a new tab)

YOUR SUBJECT, YOUR CHECKLIST

What should I revise?

Choose the checklist for your level. Topic groups are a starting map, not every syllabus outcome. Optional cards only apply if they are part of your programme.

These are broad revision groups shared across Higher and Ordinary Level, not identical lists of learning outcomes. Use the level-specific outcomes in the linked syllabus and questions from your own level. The checklist records each level separately.

Soil properties

Soil composition, processes and agricultural use.

Try a practice prompt

COLLEGEROUTE PRACTICE PROMPT

How could a soil characteristic affect crop growth?

Connect the characteristic to water, air or nutrient availability.

Crop science

Plant growth and crop production.

Try a practice prompt

COLLEGEROUTE PRACTICE PROMPT

Why might the same crop perform differently on two sites?

Consider more than one factor before recommending a change.

Animal science

Animal physiology, nutrition and production.

Try a practice prompt

COLLEGEROUTE PRACTICE PROMPT

How does a production decision relate to the animal’s needs?

Explain the biological reason before discussing the management choice.

Genetics & improvement

Inheritance applied to crops and animals.

Try a practice prompt

COLLEGEROUTE PRACTICE PROMPT

What evidence would justify a breeding decision?

Separate the desired trait from evidence that it is inherited.

Farming & environment

Agricultural systems and environmental relationships.

Try a practice prompt

COLLEGEROUTE PRACTICE PROMPT

How could a farm improve output while reducing an environmental impact?

Compare the benefits, costs and evidence for a specific action.

Investigative study

A scientific question, methods, results and evaluation.

Try a practice prompt

COLLEGEROUTE PRACTICE PROMPT

Does a set of results support a farm-related hypothesis?

Explain controls and repeatability; keep the actual data, including unexpected results.

The prompts are original study exercises, not quotations from SEC papers or predictions of examination questions. Check the official topic scope.

TURN TOPICS INTO PRACTICE

A useful next revision session

  1. Pair a scientific principle with a farm example.
  2. Practise interpreting results rather than memorising practical descriptions.
  3. Link every investigative method to the question it is intended to answer.

After practising, write down the exact point that stopped you. Revisit that step, then try again without the notes. A tick should record work you have done, not confidence alone.

Before you narrow your revision

Does a topic’s absence last year mean it is due this year?

No. This guide does not infer question probabilities from previous papers. Use past papers to practise skills and interpret instructions, not to exclude valid syllabus content.

Should I complete every optional card?

No. Check your class’s selected programme and your level. A chosen text, elective or prescribed topic is not interchangeable with another student’s programme. Use the full official syllabus for detailed outcomes.

Are the practice prompts real exam questions?

No. They are short, original CollegeRoute study prompts designed to help you apply the topic. They do not carry an official SEC mark allocation or predict examination wording.
